CRICKET (Home):

* The MasterCard six-a-side Inter-Club and Inter-Bank cricket tournaments will be worked off on September 13 and 14 at the BRC and Colts CC grounds. Twenty six banks and 24 clubs have entered this tournament and the spectators will no doubt get the best of one of the shortest versions of cricket where each side will face five overs unless a tie takes place.

Last year the tournament was played under the Hongkong six a side rules where the batsmen's innings was restricted but this year the normal six-a-side rules will apply. All top players from banks and clubs are expected to take part. They include Sanath Jayasuriya (Union Bank),Kumara Dharmasena (Hatton National Bank), and other Test players Russel Arnold (HNB),Mahela Jayawardena (Seylan) and many more.

Former Sri Lanka skipper Anura Tennekoon (Inter-bank) and former Test paceman Rumesh Ratnayake (Inter-Club) will be the adjudicators for the tournaments.

* Dharmaraja College, Kandy scored a first innings win over St. Thomas College, Matara in their Singer trophy schools under-17 division I final round cricket tournament match played at Lake View grounds, Kandy.

The highlight of the match was a fine knock of 100 by Damith Ariyadasa (with 12 fours) which put the Rajans on top. St.Thomas College, batting first, made 218 for 7 wickets declared with a top score of 45 by C.Sanjeewa. Pubudu Seneviratne had 4 for 74. In reply, Dharmaraja College made 326 for 8 wickets at close, thanks to a superb century by K.D. Ariyadasa 100,. He was well supported by P. Seneviratne 42 and N. Ekanayake 46 not out.

* Leo Stadium had an easy first innings win over Matugama CC in their under-24 match played at Matugama. The main highlight of this match was the brilliant half century scored by Amaljith Tilakaratne and the bowling performance by Chanuka Gunawardene.

Amaljith scored 84 with 6 sixes and five fours in 108 balls. Chanuka had five wickets for 60 runs just missing a hat-trick. Chief scores: Leo Stadium 185 all out (Suranga Pradeep 42, Ranga Thalagala 31, Jude Fernando 5 for 18) and 156 for 6 at close. (Amaljith Tilakaratne 84, S. Chandana 5/53); Matugama CC 151 all out (J. Jayasundara 35, Chanuka Gunawardene 5/60, Jude Fernando 4/52).

* St. Sylvester's College, Kandy, will figure in their maiden cricket finals when they take on Mahanama Maha Vidyalaya in the finals of the Horlicks trophy schools under-15 Division II cricket tournament to be played at Police grounds, Kandy this Saturday and Sunday (September 6 and 7).

St. Sylvesters captained by Harsha Wijeratne have done extremely well to remain unbeaten in the tournament throughout and enter the finals. They beat Dharmaraja 'B', St. Anthony's 'B', Sri Sumangala and Vidyartha in the Group matches. In the second round they beat President's College (Rajagiriya), Prince of Wales College, St. Mary's College, Kegalle and Ananda College 'B'. In the semi finals they beat St. Anthony's College, Wattala.

But the star of the Sylvesterian team is without doubt 14year-old Chanaka Wijesinghe whose exploits in this tournament is something akin to what a young Don Bradman would have been doing at Bowraal as a schoolboy. He has rattled up 1115 runs in the tournament matches for a fine average of 128.33 as he had been dismissed only nine times.
