In terms of the ACC constitution the newly elected president, secretary and treasurer of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board will take over similar roles of the ACC. Thus, Thilanga Sumathipala (president), Saliya Ahangama (secretary) and Nuski Mohamed (treasurer) will serve Sri Lanka's two-year term in the ACC till June 1999, unless of course they are displaced from the Cricket Board at the 1999 March elections.
The ACC office-bearers rotate every two years amongst its three full members, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The current turn is Sri Lanka's.
As a first step, Sri Lanka will have to put out a paper on a regional development plan for Asia to the International Cricket Council (ICC). With this intention the Cricket Board's chief executive Dammika Ranatunga and Ahangama will leave for Sharjah next week to meet representatives of the Indian and Pakistani Cricket Boards to have discussions with them.
ACC president Sumathipala said that the ACC Trophy Tournament for associate members will be held in Nepal in August. The winners of this competition will qualify to play in the Asia Cup Tournament in Bangladesh in February 1999. Bangladesh will also host the mini world cup tournament in September this year. It is expected to rake in 10 million US dollars which will be used for developing world cricket.
