INTERNATIONAL CRICKET COUNCIL
MEDIA RELEASE

THURSDAY 13TH AUGUST 1998

"In view of inaccurate information about umpire fees published today, I wish to correct the record.

"Umpires are nominated by their countries onto the National Grid Panel. When appointed to an overseas Test by ICC, they are paid a match fee at the level decided by their home Board plus an ICC fee, a daily fee for non-match days, meal and laundry allowances and have their accommodation and business-class air travel provided.

"Umpire fees vary from country to country, as do player fees, taking into consideration the differences in the scale of cricket operations (e.g. umpires in England are professional) and variations in currencies and standards of living.

"Recognising the differences in fee levels, the ICC fee is set on a scale basis, ranging from (pounds sterling) 200 per Test for the highest paid umpires (England) to (pounds sterling) 500 for the lowest paid in the equivalent of pounds (Pakistan umpires are at this level).

"The correct match fee payments for the two umpires in the last Test are:

Peter Willey
- ECB fee 2,755 pounds
- ICC fee 200 pounds

Javed Akhtar
- PCB fee 12,000 rupees (approx = l 62 pounds)
- ICC fee 500 pounds
- daily fees 600 pounds inclusive of warm-up match period

"It is standard policy that each of the overseas umpires appointed anywhere in the world when they are out of their home season is offered a warm-up match or matches."
