At Nelson Oval: Lucas gained first innings points over Middlesex.

Scores: Lucas 253 and 130 for 2; Middlesex 158.

Centuries from Wavell Hinds and former National representative Colin Fletcher and a five-wicket haul from veteran spinner Phillip Service were the highlights on a rain-ruined final day of the second round the 1998 County championships yesterday.

Lucas and Melbourne lead the pack with six points each, Surrey and Middlesex are joint second on four points each, while Cornwall are in third spot on two points.

Lucas took a 95-run lead on first innings after Delroy Morgan with three wickets for eight from 1.5 overs, Oneil Cruickshank three for 35 from nine and Paul Beckett two for 13 from three overs, restricted Middlesex to a paltry 158. Howard Harris top scored with an unbeaten 38 which included one six and five fours.

Lucas batting a second time, lost first innings centurian Alford Givance caught by wicketkeeper Garrick off pacer Brenton Beckford for a duck without a run on the board and a run later, Andre Coley was run out for one.

However opening batsman Kevin Riley 42 not out and Cruickshank with an unbeaten 84, stopped the slide with an unbroken third wicket partnership of 129 to give Lucas a lead of 224 before rain cut short the day's play shortly before the tea interval.

At Chedwin Park: Wavell Hinds cracked 143 to steer Surrey to first innings points over St. Catherine C.C.

Scores: St. Catherine 244 (Milton Thomas 72, Oneil Richards 44; Courtney Francis 36, Tony Powell 31; Nehemiah Perry 4 for 55, Dwight Mais two for 39, Robert Turner two for 47); Surrey 278 for five (Wavell Hinds 143, Junior Murray 32, Mario Ventura 28; Mervyn Dillon two for 53).

At Melbourne Oval: Colin Fletcher's ton piloted Melbourne to first innings points over Cornwall.

Scores: Cornwall 302 (Cleveland Davidson 153; Marlon Samuels 3 for 86, Colin Fletcher two for 40, Derron Dixon two for 44); Melbourne 375 (Colin Fletcher 165, Robert Samuels 65, Aubrey Wollaston 34, Llewellyn Meggs 34; Phillip Service 5 for 75).
