Schofield's run-in blow

Lancashire's promising young leg-spinner Chris Schofield will miss the rest of the season, writes ANDY WILSON.

Schofield suffered a thumb injury in a recent England Under 19 Test against Pakistan and will take no part in Lancashire's title bid.

The emergence of spin twins Gary Yates and Gary Keedy has made Schofield's absence easier to bear, but Lancashire coach Dav Whatmore said: ``Obviously it's a blow for him, he was hoping to force his way into the side.''

Schofield will still be challenging for a place in the England A squad which tours Zimbabwe and South Africa in the New Year.

Hit by England call-ups and injury problems, Lancashire drafted young paceman Paul Ridgway into the side for today's championship match with Durham at the Riverside stadium. Captain Wasim Akram came through a check on his bruised toe and decided to bat after winning the toss and lost John Crawley for four.

Then Neil Fairbrother departed the same way for a duck to leave Lancashire on 16-2, Nathan Wood not out on 10.
