Minor Counties: Wiltshire soar past 500 mark

By Mike Berry

15 August 1998

WILTSHIRE entered the Minor Counties record books as the first side to scale 500 under the experimental ``grade'' rules.

They went from an overnight 467 for nine to 524 all out off 130.1 overs against Cornwall at Camborne. It was a Wiltshire record, the 11th highest total in championship history and the biggest since Bedfordshire made 539 for seven against Oxfordshire 51 years ago. Despite the milestones, it failed to bring Wiltshire victory as Cornwall replied with 379 for five.

Dorset are the new leaders in the Western Division after a one-wicket success over Wales as Julian Shackleton scored two off the final ball.

In the Eastern Division, Hertfordshire were without Steve Andrew, the former Essex paceman, against Lincolnshire. He had a one-match ban imposed by the club committee for showing dissent to an umpire.
