Eight teams in u-15 inter-region cricket tourney

Eight teams will participate in the inaugural under-15 inter-region cricket tournament organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka which will get under way on August 22 at various venues in the island.

The eight teams have been drawn into two groups where they play each other on a league basis. The first two teams in each group will move into the semi-finals which will be played at the Asgiriya Stadium on September 9 and 10. The finals will be also played at the same venue on September 12.

This was disclosed at a briefing by the Director, Development of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka Mr. Malcolm Perera at the Regional Board Office in Kandy over the weekend.

Mr. Malcolm Perera said that all expenses incurred in staging the matches including the travelling of the teams will be borne by the respective Regional Boards. The selection of the Regional teams will be done by the Regional Selection Committee. Only those cricketers born after January 1st, 1983 will be eligible to participate. This tournament is being organised by the BCCSL National Development Committee to spot young talent from the regions, so that they could be groomed as future national players. The eight Regions which will be participating in this tournament are:

Group A: Colombo North, Region IV, Region II and Colombo North Outer.
Group B: Colombo South, Region V, Region III and Colombo South Outer.
Semi-finals: September 9 and 10: Team A1 vs Team B2 and Team B1 vs Team A2. Venue Kandy.
Finals: At the Asgiriya Stadium on September 12.

Badulla Maroons in semis

Badulla Maroons Sports Club qualified for the semi-finals of the Badulla league cricket tournament when they beat Veal's Park Sports Club 119 runs in their encounter played at the Badulla Esplanade.

Leslie de Silva who scored 106 runs, put on 202 runs partnership for the second wicket with Tharanga Silva (61) and enabled Badulla Maroons to score 270 runs in 39 overs.

Veal's Park SC were able to score only 151 runs.

Scores:

Badulla Maroons SC 270 (Leslie de Silva 106, Tharanga Silva 61, Gayan Disanayake 15, G. Ovitigala 17 and S. Samantha 3 for 65).

Veal's Park SC 151 (S. Thilan 16, A. Duminda 52, M. Sahiran 15, Gayan Dissanayake 3 for 38, R. Ratnayake 2 for 3).

In another B division encounter Citiyas SC beat Hali Ela Sports Club by one wicket.

Hali Ela SC 169 (Ranjith Dissanayake 30, C. Harshajeewa 58, Chaminda Waduge 19, Hemantha Wijesiri 24, B. Ratnayake 2 for 26, J. Hassan 2 for 28, S. Samsudeen 4 for 11).

Citiyas SC 170 for 9 (M. Riharm 22, B. Ramanayake 17, S. Samsudeen 23, Asanka Lanka 49, Roy Hilar 2 for 23, W. Sudeeptha 2 for 25, Ranjith Dissanayake 2 for 27).
