KCCA to set up cricket academy

KARACHI, Dec 17: The Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) is to set up a cricket academy at the refurbished KCCA Stadium in April next year. This was decided at the annual general body meeting of the KCCA, held at the National Stadium here on Tuesday evening, under the chairmanship of the KCCA president Nusrat Azeem.

The general body also took a number of decisions. It passed the annual audited accounts presented by the KCCA's honorary treasurer S.N. Hermain and expressed satisfaction over the financial control of the KCCA funds.

However, the general body has requested Dr Mohammad Ali Shah, former vice-president of the KCCA, to render the income and expenditure account of KCCA Stadium for audit the period the ground remained under his control and advances and payments by KCCA made to him.

The general body, while expressing its confidence in president Nusrat Azeem, honorary secretary Prof Sirajul Islam Bukhari and S.N. Hermain, also appreciated achievements of the KCCA during the year as reflected in the annual report submitted by Prof Bukhari.

The general body elected old Karachi Cricket Association stalwarts Burjor D. Jagus, Faiz Ahmed and Ismail Kalu as honorary life vice-presidents of the KCCA in recognition of their past services. It also confirmed the election of Khalil Ahmed Nainitalwala as vice president of KCCA for a three-year term.

The KCCA general body appreciated the efforts of the task force and the stadium development committee in renovating the KCCA Stadium, which will be ready by March 1999, and expressed its satisfaction at the progress of work at the ground where five match pitches and five practice pitches are being developed.

The development committee informed the general body that the construction of pavilion and other amenities at the KCCA Stadium will be taken up in the second phase.

The general body has appealed to the Pakistan Cricket Board to install floodlights at the National Stadium for the benefit of cricket fans of the city.

The general body also decided to re-introduce matting pitches in the city. Nusrat Azeem announced that at least one matting pitch will be financed by the KCCA in each zone so that budding cricketers have a chance of batting practice on bouncy surface.

The meeting concluded with the general body passing a condolence resolution and offering fateha for the departed souls of Anwar Hussain Hidayatullah, a former vice-president of the KCCA and son of Sir Ghulam Hussain Hidayatullah, the ex-Governor of Sindh, and Jamil Ashraf, secretary of Zone-V.
