Trinity in 'semis'

Trinity College beat Kingswood College on a faster run rate to enter the semifinals of the Yasaratne Tennekoon memorial challenge trophy cricket tournament match played at the Asgiriya Stadium yesterday.

The Kingswoodians had to score 161 runs to win from 26 overs in the revised target but they ended up at 80 for 6. Earlier Trinity skipper Kaushalya Weeraratne hit a breezy 64 with the help of six sixes and two fours as the home side scored 189 for 9 in 50 overs.

Scores:

Trinity: 189 for 9 in 50 overs (C.Molligoda 39, K.Weeraratne 64, T.Rajaratne 24, C.Seneviratne 2 for 14, T.Madanayake 3 for 41, L.Ekanayake 2 for 39).

Kingswood: 80 for 6 in 26 overs (R.Mawzoon 11, M.Wattegedera 23, K.Weeraratne 2 for 12).

Ravi Peiris 100 n.o.

A fine unbeaten century by opener Ravi Peiris (100) helped Royal declare their first innings at 270 for 6 on the opening day of their inter school cricket encounter against St.Benedict's played at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Ravi Peiris struck six boundaries and received good support from Jehan Mubarak (50) and Malintha Thotuvilage (69). In reply St.Benedict's lost two wickets without a single run on the board when rain halted play at 4.30 p.m.

Royal: 270 for 6 decl (Ravi Peiris 100 n.o, Jehan Mubarak 50, Malintha Thotuvilage 69, Angelo Perera 14, Harith Rajakaruna 16, M.Fernando 3 for 77, S.Perera 2 for 62)

St.Benedict's: 0 for 2 (Asanga Sanjeeva 2 for 0).

Ranga helps SSC

A brilliant all round performance of 70 not out (3 sixes and 4 fours) and 4 for 10 by skipper Ranga Dissanayake helped St. Sylvester's College to score an easy 9 wickets win over Wickremabahu Central College, Gampola to enter the semi-finals of the Yasaratne Tennekoon Memorial Kandy Schools Limited Cricket Tournament organised by the Kandy Regional Cricket Board and played at Police Grounds Kandy, yesterday.

Wickremabahu Central Gampola were restricted to 144 for 9 wickets in 40 overs. Thanks to a good knock of 66 not out by S. Tharanga Spinner Ranga Dissanayake took 4 for 10.

When Sylvestrians batted rain started falling but they beat the rain and reached their target of 148 runs in just 17 overs.

Scores:

Wickramabahu Central College 144 for 9 in 40 overs. (S. Tharanga 66 not out, N. Ratnayake 13, S. Jayasuriya 22, R. Dissanayake 4 for 10).

St. Sylvestrians College 148 for 1 in 17 overs (Ranga Dissanayake 70 n.o. W. Konara 32 and F. S. Liyanage 30 not out).

Lionel, Tissa in Australia

The Sri Lankan cricketers will have two cheer leaders to encourage them on their tour of Australia. They are Lionel and Saddhatissa.

Lionel is sponsored by Ceylinco Insurance and Saddhatissa by Nelson Chocolates, Maharagama.

Tissa Fernando, the proprietor of FLODRY, New Zealand will also be there to support the Lankan cricketers.

Lionel and Tissa, along with Percy Abayasekera were in Lahore when Sri Lanka won the World Cup.
