Withers, 27, decided before the season started to take a year off, but has had a change of heart and has resumed playing at club level for Marist, and rejoined the Canterbury squad.

``I had been immersed in cricket for a fair while and at the time felt like I really needed a break. Since then I've managed to sort a few things out and am managing my time better,'' said Withers, a development officer for New Zealand Cricket. ``I'm keen again and committed to do the best I can.''

A refreshed Withers would be welcomed at both provincial and national level if her performances warranted selection.

She became an integral component of both teams in recent seasons as a new-ball medium-fast bowler and capable middle and top-order batsman.

One of the reasons Withers had decided to take a break from the game was to pursue her interest in music as a vocalist and she has made a recording.

Withers played one match for Marist two weeks ago when it upset competition leader Lancaster Park-Woolston. She starred, taking four for 16 and top scoring with 36.

``The key thing now over the next six weeks or so is to get my fitness up to scratch.'' Canterbury's next match in the State Insurance Cup series is on January 9 and 10 against Otago in Christchurch.

Withers said performances permitting she would like to regain her national women's team place for the upcoming series against Australia and South Africa in February.

Long term she has her goals set on playing at the World Cup in 2000 to be held in New Zealand.

National coach Mike Shrimpton welcomed the available-again Withers.

``Her ability and experience are invaluable and we are keen to see her back but it's a step-by-step thing.''
