Doctors at the hospital declared him dead at around 3.30 pm. His body will be flown to New Delhi by British Airways tonight from here.

He played four tests and 29 one-day internationals for India.

Lamba (38) who had fatal head injuries on Friday during a cricket match in Dhaka Stadium, had undergone brain surgery on Saturday. Since then he was in deep comma.

Prof Shafiquer Rahman, chief of the intensive care unit of the PG Hospital said his brain was not functioning and he was kept alive artificially through life support system.

``We took all out medical efforts for his survival,'' he told Dawn in the afternoon.

Body of Lamba was taken to Abahani Club premises before handing over to his family members in presence of Indian High Commission officials.

Lamba's Irish wife Kim Lamba, five-year-old son and three-year daughter and sister Anita are in Dhaka.

A pall of gloom cast on the cricket loving people and his cricket mates here when his death news was announced.

The Delhi-based opening batsman, Lamba played for the Abahani Club and suffered fatal head injuries during Premier League match against arch rival Mohammedan on Friday.

Immediately he was admitted to a city clinic and then shifted to PG Hospital. Following deterioration of his condition Neuro specialist, Dr Rashiduddin and Dr Afzal operated him upon there.

Dr Brahma Prakash, a specialist from Delhi, also came to Dhaka on Sunday to see his condition but returned back on the same day seeing no hope of his recovery.
