Dharshika and Indika get a 'ton' each By Lal Gunesekera

Wesley's Dharshika Jayakody and Indika Ranasinghe slammed a century apiece as they took a 28-run lead over S. Thomas' on the first innings in their drawn schools cricket match at Campbell Park yesterday. The Thomians made 241 and Wesley replied with 269 for 9 declared. The Thomians in their second innings were 157 for 3 when stumps were drawn.

Jayakody made 125 with 14 boundaries, while Ranasinghe made 100 including 10 hits to the ropes. These two Wesley batsmen were associated in a fine 227-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

The Thomian bowlers failed to get an early break through and the most successful bowler was L. Fernando (4 for 40), while Suranga Pieris chipped in with 3 for 48.

The Thomians in their second turn were 157 for 3 at close with Nilanka Pieris and Sidath Medonza hitting half centuries. The former made 54 with seven boundaries, while the latter was unbeaten on 70 with 12 fours. They put on 92-runs for the third wicket.

S. Thomas' 241 in 78 overs (Sidath Medonza 28, Janaka Siriwardene 44, Nilanka Pieris 43, Shanuka Caldera 15, Gihan Fernando 37, Z. Kanaka 40, Brian Senadhira 5 for 70, Rienzie Senadhira 2 for 70, M. Zainudeen 2 for 42) and 157 for 3 at close in 40 overs (Janaka Siriwardene 24, Nilanka Pieris 54, Sidath Medonza not out 70, Rienzie Senadhira 2 for 57).

Wesley 269 for 9 declared in 93.3 overs (Dharshika Jayakody 125, Indika Ranasinghe 100, M. de Silva not out 16, L. Fernando 4 for 40, S. Pieris 3 for 48).

Weeraratne 101 not out for Trinity in drawn game

KINGSWOOD COLLEGE forced a draw in their inter-school cricket match against Trinity after being forced to follow-on.

Trinity who batted first, made 269 for 4 wickets, with Kaushalya Weeraratne making 101 not out and with S. Fernando 20 not out put on 81 runs for the unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership.

Kingswood in their turn were shot out for 103 runs and forced to follow-on, made 158 for 6 wickets in their second turn. It was the fourth-wicket partnership of 84 runs between R. Perera (52) and T. Madanayake (40) that saved the day for the Kingswoodians.

Trinity's S. Fernando bowled best to take 5 for 52 in Kingswood's second innings.

Trinity 269 for 4 wkts dec. (C. Molligoda 21, S. Gamage 69, R. de Raffayal 47, Kaushalya Weeraratne 101 not out, S. Fernando 20 not out, R. Perera 2 for 50).

St. Peter's beat Cambrians to get 7th win for season

A GOOD all-round performance by Malinda Warnapura (not out 44 in the second innings and 4 for 52) helped St. Peter's beat Prince of Wales by 5 wickets in their schools cricket match at Moratuwa yesterday. This is their third win in a row and the seventh for the season.

Prince of Wales in their first innings made 176 and the Peterites replied with 190. In their second turn, the Cambrians made 172 leaving the Peterites to make 160 to win, which they achieved for the loss of five wickets.

Prince of Wales 176 and 172 (Indunil Hittetiya 42, Nuwan Ratnayake 35, Hashan Fernando 23, Malinda Warnapura 4 for 52, C. Pieris 4 for 34).

St. Peter's 190 and 161 for 5 (Jerome Fernando 40, Malinda Warnapura not out 44, A. Fonseka 26, H. Fernando 3 for 62).

Ananda 116/5 in reply to Royal's 213/9 dec.

ANANDA were 116 for 5 in reply to Royal's 213 for 9 declared on the first day of their inter school cricket encounter at Ananda Mawatha yesterday.

Royal, electing to bat first after winning the toss were helped by a valuable 84 run stand for the third wicket between left hander Jehan Mubarak (49) and Shehan Abegunasekera (51 with eight fours).

Ananda in their turn had to face 23 overs and M.Pushpakumara(43 off 40, balls with six boundaries and a six) was the main run getter for the home team.

Josephians in 10 wkt win

ST. JOSEPH'S beat Joseph Vaz, Wennappuwa by 10 wickets in their inter school cricket encounter at Darley Road yesterday.

St. Joseph's 251 for 9 declared and 25 for no loss.

Joseph Vaz: 122 and 153 (Kamal Ranjan 46, A. Anton 18, Shane Cooray 16, Shivantha Fernando 22 n.o., Monto Perera 3 for 31, Roshan de Silva 2 for 29).

No play in unofficial 'Test'

THE FOUR-DAY Unofficial 'Test' between England 'A' and Sri Lanka 'A' was not played yesterday at the Welegedera Stadium in Kurunegala. The second day will be today and the match will go on till Tuesday.

At close of play on Friday, England made 202 for 4 wickets.

Former Wesley Principal Rev. Cartman dies

REV. JAMES Cartman, a former Principal of Wesley College, passed away in England on January 28 at the age of 87 years. He was known as the cricketing padre.

Rev. Cartman was Wesley's head from 1945 to 1949 and during this period, Wesley fared well in sports.

Having played for the Colombo Cricket Club (CCC), Rev. Cartman, was the first president of the Ceylon Schools Cricket Association.

On his retirement, Rev. Cartman, was appointed by the government to be the Student's Welfare Officer at the Ceylon High Commission in London.

He leaves behind his wife Winifred and daughter Christine Waver.

His funeral takes place in London on February 5.
