Croos' ton helps Maris Stella to 143 run win

CANARIC CROOS with a polished unbeaten century, helped Maris Stella to beat St. Mary's Kegalle by 143 runs in their inter-school cricket match at the Kegalle Esplanade recently.

Dewapura gets hat-trick and Dharmapala win by 9 wkts

A FINE allround performance by Sanjaya Dewapura who had a match-bag of 10 for 72 and scored 53 in Dharmapala's first innings total of 206 for 9 wickets declared helped them to beat Mahinda, Galle by 9 wickets in their inter-school cricket match at Pannipitiya yesterday.

Dewapura who took 4 for 37 in Mahinda's first innings of 99 captured 6 for 35 which included a hat-trick in the second innings total of 163.

Dharmapala: 206 for 9 wkts dec. and 60 for 1 wkt (Chamila Jayasinghe 25 not out, Hiran Gunewardena 25 not out).

Mahinda: overnight 51 for 4 wkts - all out 99. (R. Prabath 20, T. Rupasinghe 24, Sanjaya Dewapura 4 for 37, Jaminda Segara 3 for 30, Gayan Wiswajith 3 for 5) and 163 (R. Prabath 54, M. Ranasinghe 26, H. Wijesinghe 26, Sanjaya Dewapura 6 for 35.

Lanka de Silva's 126 helps CCC to get 1st innings points

CCC helped by a splendid unbeaten 126 by Lanka de Silva have already obtained first innings points from NCC in their Saravanamuttu Trophy (Segment 'A') cricket tournament match at Maitland Place yesterday. NCC made 234 and CCC in reply were 298 for 4 at close.

Lanka de Silva coming in after the fall of the first wicket, slammed 13 boundaries and a six in his unbeaten century which came in 328 minutes facing 253 deliveries.

De Silva put on 81 runs for the second wicket with Bradman Ediriweera (47 with seven boundaries) and 90 for the third wicket with Anushka Polonawita (47 with six fours). He then put on 84 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket with Duncan Arnolda who was unbeaten on 35 with five fours.

NCC 234 in 86 overs (Sanjeewa Weerasinghe 28, Hashan Tillekeratne 50, Kumar Sangakkara 34, Sanjeewa Jayaratne not out 44, Indika Gallage 4 for 45).

St. Sebastian's - St. Benedict's ends in tame draw

THE St. Sebastian's vs St. Benedict's inter-school cricket match ended in a tame draw at Moratuwa yesterday.

St. Benedict's made 191 runs in the first innings while St. Sebastian's who were 55 for one wicket overnight made 251 with Prasanna Jayawardena making 75 and Buddhika Mendis 50.

In the second innings St. Benedict's made 163 for 3 wickets at close with Roshan Tissera making 79 not out and Dinesh Silva 56 with the two being involved in a third-wicket partnership of 124 runs.

St. Benedict's 191 and 163 for 3 wkts (Roshan Tissera 79 not out, Dinesh Silva 56, D. Godfred 2 for 37).

St. Sebastian's: overnight 55 for 1 wkt - 251 all out (Prasanna Jayawardena 75, Buddhika Mendis 50, Malshan Fernando 31, Nuwan Fernando 25, Ranga Balasuriya 21, Pradeep Dissanayake 3 for 61, Malka Fernando 2 for 46.

Gunewardena's ton helps Maris Stella to 10-wkt win

Maris Stella beat Sri Piayaratne by 10 wickets in their inter-school cricket match at Negombo yesterday.

The highlight of the match was a fine century by C. Gunewardena for Maris Stella in their total of 313 for 8 wickets declared.

Sri Piyaratne 199 and 137 (K. Amarakoon 58, R. Dharmakeerthi 19, L. Anthony 4 for 20, C. Croos 2 for 32, C. Vaas Gunewardena 2 for 30, C. Gunewardena 2 for 19).

Maris Stella overnight 182 for 3 wkts - 313 for 8 wkts dec. (C. Gunewardena 107, K. Bulathsinhala 51, L. Anthony 48, C. Croos 34, H. Priyankara 5 for 159, R. Samantha 2 for 93) and 25 for no wkt.

Unichela in final

Unichela entered the final of the Mercantile 'D' division cricket final when they beat Prosreight by 108 runs in the semi-final played yesterday at the MCA grounds.

Trinity - Wesley drawn

WESLEY set to make an impossible 187 runs for victory in six mandatory overs were 37 for 2 in their cricket encounter which ended in a draw at Campbell Park yesterday.

Wesley continuing from their overnight score of 59 for 3 in reply to Trinity's first innings score of 249 got up to 197 for 9 wickets declared mainly through a lone effort of 84 runs by Nalin Balasuriya.

Off spinner S. Fernando bowled well to claim four wickets for Trinity.

Enjoying a lead of 52 runs Trinity batting again did not fare too well in that they were 63 for 6 and eventually declared at 135 for 7. All rounder Suranga Morathota who made an unbeaten 63 in the first innings batted well again to be unbeaten with 56 for Trinity.

Dharshika Jayakody and Brian Senadheera shared the wickets for Wesley.

Having to made 187 runs for victory Wesley were 37 for 2 with Jayakody on an unbeaten 27 with four hits to the ropes and one over it.

Royal hold St. Peter's to a draw

ROYAL put the breaks on the Peterite winning spree, forcing a draw at Reid Avenue yesterday.

Set to make 131 runs off 8 mandatory overs, St. Peter's were 29 for 3 at stumps.

St.Peter's have been enjoyng a successful season recording seven wins, scoring three in succession beating Wesley, Nalanda and Prince of Wales.

In reply to Royal's first innings 202 the Peterites were 114 for 1 overnight. Unbeaten overnight opener Angelo Fonseka who had scored 68 top scored with 76 with 12 fours and two sixes facing 99 balls and useful contributions from Mahesh Perera (40), Malinda Warnapura (35), and Ranga Dias (22) saw the Peterites declare their innings at 244 for nine shortly before lunch.

Medium pacer Thushan Amarasuriya (4 for19) was the top wicket getter for Royal.

Royal, in their second innings, mustered 172 off 58.3 overs when they were all out in the 9.3 mandatory over leaving St.Peter's to get 131 runs in 8 mandatory overs.

Lefthander Jehan Mubarak (40), Ruchira Jayasuriya (32) and Lasantha Liyanage were the chief scorers in their second innings.

Ranga Dias and Dilshan Rupasinghe took three wickets apiece.

Fernando and Vansanden help Joes to beat Thomians by an innings

JOSEPHIAN bowlers Dinraj Fernando (8 for 40) and medium pacer Gavin Vansanden (5 for 11) ripped through the Thomian batting and St. Joseph's beat S. Thomas' by an innings and 13 runs to regain the Gilmour Jayasuriya Trophy at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

Leg-spinner Dinraj Fernando in the first innings and Gavin Vansanden's bowling efforts were chiefly responsible for the Thomian batting debacle. They were dismissed for 136 in the first innings and a paltry 84 in the second with Vansanden claiming five wickets in an inspired spell of medium pace bowling.

The Joes were 146 for 2 wickets overnight and declared at 238 for 8. Johannes Jayasuriya hit a fine 92 with nine fours and a six while Monto Perera (43), Aminda de Mel 44 and Gavin Vansanden were the main scorers for the Joes.

S. Thomas' 136 and 84 (Nilanka Pieris 36, Gihan Fernando 11, Gavin Vansanden 5 for 11, Shenal Warnakula 2 for 18).

St. Joseph's 146 for 2 overnight 238 for 8 declared (Monto Perera 43, Johannes Jayasuriya 92, Aminda de Mel 44, Gavin Vansanden 13, Nilanka Pieris 3 for 39, Suranga Pieris 2 for 52).

Ruwan and Sameera star in Ananda's innings win

SAMEERA PANAPITIYA (114) and fine off-spin bowling by Ruwan Jayawardena (6 for 5) helped Ananda beat St. Anthony's Katugastota by an innings and 43 runs in their inter-school cricket match at Ananda Mawatha yesterday.

St. Anthony's did well to make 228 for 7 wickets declared in their first innings, but the Antonians found off-spinner Ruwan Jayawardena unplayable in the second innings. Jayawardena bowled a well controlled length to have figures of 5.5 overs, 5 maidens, 6 wickets for 5 runs.

When it was Ananda's turn to bat, Sameera Panapitiya hit a superb century (114) which included 17 fours to help the Anandians in their chase for runs.

Ananda's openers Sameera Panapitiya and Lakshan Fernando (64) who had put on 113 runs on Friday, were able to add just one run yesterday, but the solid foundation laid by these two helped the others to score freely, particularly M. Pushpakumara who made 56 runs off 36 balls. His knock included a six and five fours.

St. Anthony's Katugastota 228 for 7 wkts dec and 54 (N. Nizan 19, Ruwan Jayawardena 6 for 5).

Ananda overnight 113 for no wkt - 325 for 6 wkts dec (Sameera Panapitiya 114, Lakshan Fernando 64, R. Basnayake 32, M. Pushpakumara 55, N. Jayawardena 18, R. Gunaratne 2 for 35, P. Jayawardena 2 for 62).

Nisal Fernando places SSC for outright win today

SSC who have already obtained first innings points from Singha SC are set to get an outright win today in their Saravanamuttu Trophy (Segment 'A') cricket tournament match at Maitland Place. SSC made 315 in their first innings with Singha making only 132 for 8. In their second turn, SSC declared at 272 for 4 and Singha staving to avoid defeat were 108 for 3 at close yesterday.

The highlight of the game was Nisal Fernando's unbeaten 101 for SSC in their second turn. He hit 12 boundaries and two sixes and was associated in an unbroken partnership of 152 runs for the fifth wicket with Hemantha Wickremaratne who was unbeaten on 62 with four fours. Aruna Gunawardene too helped to swell the SSC total with 51.
