PAKISTAN v NEW ZEALAND
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Karachi, December 8. New Zealand won by seven wickets. Toss: Pakistan.

New Zealand ended their tour with their first one-day victory over their hosts on Pakistani soil for 12 years, and did it in style, with seven wickets and 29 balls to spare. A brisk opening stand – 96 in 16 overs – between Young and Astle gave them an excellent start, and Fleming saw them home. Earlier, Saeed Anwar took his aggregate in limited-overs internationals in 1996 to 1,595, though for once he was outshone by his colleagues. Ijaz Ahmed added 108 in 75 balls with Wasim Akram, who hit four fours and five sixes as he took 66 off 39 deliveries. That took Pakistan to 234, but this time it was not enough.

Man of the Match: N. J. Astle.

Men of the Series: Pakistan – Saeed Anwar; New Zealand – S. P. Fleming.
