SOUTH AFRICA v AUSTRALIA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Port Elizabeth, March 31. Australia won by seven wickets. Toss: Australia. International debut: L. J. Koen.

A dazzling 115 off 126 balls by Mark Waugh – his tenth hundred in one-day internationals – and a 52-ball fifty from his brother Steve squared the series with five overs to spare. They shared an unbroken partnership of 107. Steady bowling from Reiffel and Dale – who took the first three wickets for five runs – reduced South Africa to 16 for three before a century stand between Kallis and Rhodes. Only two other batsmen managed double figures. In his final appearance of a worrying tour, Taylor scored 17 from 44 balls. But Mark Waugh fluently reached his hundred with successive sixes – he hit three in all, with eight fours. Australia's victory was only their sixth in 19 one-day games since their World Cup final defeat 12 months earlier.

Man of the Match: M. E. Waugh. Attendance: 15,648.
