SOUTH AFRICA v AUSTRALIA Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998
At Cape Town, April 2 (day/night). South Africa won by 46 runs. Toss: Australia. South Africa regained their advantage, thanks to a magnificent innings from Rhodes – and a hand injury that prevented Mark Waugh from batting. Australian captain Taylor stepped down, and Healy took over after completing a two-match suspension. Another economical opening spell from Dale, backed up by Gillespie, restricted South Africa to 106 for five after 29 overs, but Rhodes improvised 83 off 78 balls. He received hard-hitting support from Pollock and Bryson as Warne's last two overs went for 29. A target of 246 was too much for Australia's depleted batting order, and Bevan, scoring 82 off 104 balls, offered the only resistance. Man of the Match: J. N. Rhodes. Attendance: 21,188. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
