NEW ZEALAND v SRI LANKA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Christchurch, March 25 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by six wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka reminded their hosts that they were still world one-day champions, winning with more than 14 overs in hand. Jayasuriya hit a dazzling 79 from 63 balls, with eight fours and four sixes. His 29-ball fifty was believed to be the fastest in one-day internationals in New Zealand and he hit 24 off one Doull over – 406644. At the other end, De Silva rediscovered his form, chiming in with six fours and three sixes. Heavy dew under the floodlights made the ball slippery and New Zealand had too small a target to defend; their top eight had reached double figures, but only Harris, with 38, dragged them past 200. Jayasuriya picked up three wickets.

Man of the Match: S. T. Jayasuriya.
