NEW ZEALAND v SRI LANKA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Wellington, March 27. New Zealand won by 69 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. International debut: A. J. Penn.

Again, New Zealand were put in and made 201, but this time it was enough. Cairns and Parore led the recovery from 91 for five, but Sri Lanka looked good at 87 for three. Then they lost headway against the slow-medium pace of Larsen – who conceded only nine in seven overs - Harris and Astle. The last seven wickets fell for just 45. When De Silva was 15, he appeared to try to prevent Larsen from running him out and refused to leave when umpire Watkin gave him out for obstruction. Watkin reversed his decision and De Silva made 36 before he was ninth out. Afterwards, De Silva was severely reprimanded by referee Peter Burge.

Man of the Match: C. L. Cairns.
