SRI LANKA v ZIMBABWE
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, September 3. Sri Lanka won by six wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka. International debut: A. R. Whittall.

Play was delayed eight minutes while the umpires hunted for the bails, which turned up in a groundsman's pocket. Even then, momentum was sluggish: Wickremasinghe bowled five wides in his first over. Evans hit a career-best 96, with six fours and three sixes almost exclusively to the mid-wicket boundary, and lifted Zimbabwe to a respectable 227. That suddenly looked threatening when Olonga, making a rare limited-overs appearance, blasted out both openers. But his second spell was delayed until De Silva's century, with 13 fours and a six at better than a run a ball, was in the book and Sri Lanka's clean sweep in the qualifiers was certain.

Man of the Match: P. A. De Silva.
