INDIA v SOUTH AFRICA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Hyderabad, October 17 (day/night). South Africa won by 47 runs. Toss: South Africa. International debut: S. Somasunder.

India, on a high from their Test win over Australia in Delhi, came quickly back to earth as South Africa rattled up 261. Kirsten, who hit 84 from 81 balls, and Hudson led the way with a speedy opening stand of 74 and, though Kumble checked them with three wickets, Cronje and McMillan rounded off the innings. India were in trouble from the early loss of Tendulkar. Dravid played well for 62, but only Azharuddin and Ganguly gave support, and India were all out for 214. It was Azharuddin's 226th one-day international, which put him past Kapil Dev's Indian record.

Man of the Match: G. Kirsten.
