INDIA v AUSTRALIA
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Bangalore, October 21 (day/night). India won by two wickets. Toss: Australia.

Taylor at last made his maiden one-day century in his 98th match and, with Steve Waugh, established a sound position. But a late collapse left Australia to defend a modest 215. India were quickly in trouble as night fell and, when Tendulkar was eighth out at 164, defeat seemed inevitable. Then bowlers Srinath and Kumble gave the tale a final twist with an unbroken match-winning stand of 52 in seven overs. That averted any repetition of the crowd disturbance which followed Azharuddin's disgruntled response to his lbw dismissal; there had been 17 minutes of plastic bottle throwing and peace was restored only after Azharuddin appealed to the crowd.

Man of the Match: S. R. Tendulkar.
