INDIA v AUSTRALIA Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998
At Mohali, November 3 (day/night). India won by five runs. Toss: Australia. India scraped through in the match to decide South Africa's opponents in the final. Sent in by Taylor, who wanted to avoid bowling with a ball affected by the evening dew, they had mocked him by rattling up 289, equalling their highest score against Australia. Tendulkar, Azharuddin and Dravid were murderous on a perfect pitch. But Taylor and the rejuvenated Slater replied in kind. When Australia began the last ten overs needing 62 with six wickets in hand, it seemed they must win. Then a series of accidents left them to get six from the last over with one wicket standing. Tendulkar brought himself on and appealed for lbw first ball; he did not get it, but wicket-keeper Mongia ran out Hogg as he tried to steal a leg-bye. Man of the Match: M. Azharuddin. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
