AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Adelaide, December 15. Pakistan won by 12 runs. Toss: Pakistan.

Australia's unexpected slide began with a narrow defeat induced by clever bowling from leg-spinner Shahid Afridi and off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq. Afridi rocketed a fast ball through Blewett's defences and Saqlain turned several away from the right-handers without any discernible change in his action. Saqlain took a career-best five for 29 and the mystery of his leg-break intensified when captain Wasim Akram said, "He won't even tell me how he bowls it." Australia lost their composure and folded from 192 for five to 211 all out, chasing 224. After a month of under-achievement by West Indies, this day lit up the summer: it introduced a Pakistan side full of excitement, passion and fresh, unorthodox players.

Man of the Match: Saqlain Mushtaq. Attendance: 21,103.
