AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1998

At Brisbane, January 5 (day/night). West Indies won by seven wickets. Toss: Australia. International debuts: A. J. Bichel, A. M. Stuart.

West Indies methodically and nervelessly reeled in Australia's 281 for four, a total which made the home side 4-1 on favourites with the bookmakers at the break. It was the best chase in the history of Australian one-day internationals, apart from New Zealand's 297 to beat England at Adelaide in 1982–83. There were three sublime centuries: Lara and Mark Waugh cancelled each other out with identical scores – 102 from 114 balls. But West Indies were given the edge by Hooper, who scored a run-a-ball 110 and secured victory with seven balls to spare after a beautifully timed chase. This was West Indies' 15th win in their 17 one-day internationals at the Gabba.

Man of the Match: C. L. Hooper. Attendance: 21,801.
