Petes in innings victory

St. Peter's avenged their last year's defeat at the hands of Wesley, when they convincingly beat them by an innings, a little before tea at Bambalapitiya, yesterday.

St. Peter's resuming from their overnight score of 167 for 5, in reply to Wesley's first innings score of 155, lost three early wickets to be 199 for 8, but a breezy unbeaten 38 from Aman Samsudeen with three sixes and a boundary, enabled St. Peter's to get up to 238 off 50.5 overs and 275 minutes.

Earlier overnight batsman Mahesh Perera, batted well to make 58. The pick of the Wesley bowlers was, fifteen year old right arm off-spinner Rienzie Senadeera, who bowled effectively to claim 6 for 94.

Wesley conceding a lead of 83 runs, batting a second time, failed miserably against the pace cum spin attack of the Peterites, to be all out for 79.

The only form of resistance by Wesley, came through a third wicket partnership which produced 36 runs, between Prasad Amarasekera and Nalin Balasuriya. For the Peterites, the consistent little left-arm spinner, Chrishanta Peiris, bowled well again to take 4 for 18 and have a match bag of 7 for 32 - he was ably supported by Malinda Warnapura, Dhanushka Hettihewa and Dilshan Rupasinghe who claimed two wickets each.

A century by W.R. Peris (101 no) was the highlight in the inter-school cricket encounter between Moratuwa Vidyalaya and Maris Stella Vidyalaya which ended in a draw at Negombo, Yesterday.

Trinity 'A' hold Rajans

Trinity College 'A' fought back after being asked to follow on to draw their inter-school cricket match against Dharmaraja College 'A' at Lake View grounds, Kandy.

For the Rajans D. Bandara top scored with a fine 72 while K. Fernando top scored for Trinity 'A' in both innings (38 and 52) to stall the Rajans.

Dharmaraja College 'A' 252 for 7 decl. (D. Bandara 72, S.B.Wijeratne 29, D.K. Samarakoon 15, Y.B. Nagahapitiya 26 not out, D. Rodrigo 2 for 39, M. Dissanayake 4 for 22).

Trinity College 'A' 86 all out (K. Fernando 38, D. Rodrigo 14, not out, D. Bandara 2 for 27, N. Nagahapitiya 3 for 19, S.B. Wijeratne 4 for 15) and 110 for 3 wickets (K. Fernando 52, M. Halpitiya 16).

NCC Clinch Hatna Trophy with 5 wkt win

NCC clinched the Hatna Trophy with a decisive 5 wicket win over Tamil Union at the NCC grounds, yesterday.

Tamil Union put into bat lost wickets at regular intervals to be all out for 162 in 44.4 overs. Only Indika de Saram (27) and Vajira Wijegunawardene (23) offered any resistance.

The NCC bowlers were guilty of indisciplined bowling which accounted for 16 wides and a total of 24 extras. Russel Arnold and N. Saranasekera bowled economically to pick up two wickets each.

NCC chasing a modest total were cruising at 99 for 3 when Russel Arnold who was stroking the ball well played a rash stroke to be caught in the deep for 40.

At this juncture the game was well poised with NCC needing a further 63 from 15 overs with 6 wickets in hand. They lost a further wicket to be 99 for 5 and were tottering at this stage but a cameo knock of 40 n.o. by Asela Pathirana ably supported by Sanjaya Jayaratne (22 n.o.) who together put on 65 in an unbroken stand for the 6th wkt saw NCC home by 5 wkts.

Tamil Union 162 all out in 44.4 overs (Indika de Saram 27, Vajira Wijegunawardene 23, Russel Arnold 2/29, N. Saranasekera 2/17).
