Shock Schofield call for Lancs

Chris Schofield was set for a shock Lancashire debut against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay today.

The 19-year-old Littleborough leg spinner was called into the squad for the first time as Lancashire looked to step up their Championship bid.

He joined fellow youngsters Nathan Wood, Paddy McKeown and Mark Chilton - who is only just back from Durham University.

It was a major test of Lancashire's strength in depth with Mike Atherton and Andy Flintoff away on Test duty and Neil Fairbrother missing with his ankle ligament injury.

But Schofield's call-up showed that Lancashire are looking to leg spin to provide an extra ingredient in their attack for the rest of the season. So far their success has been built around a four-pronged seam attack with the odd handy contribution from Mike Watkinson's off spin.

Burnley batsman Michael Brown was today involved in the ECB Schools Unders 19s game against Pakistan Under 19s at Wellington College in Berkshire. The 18-year-old Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn, pupil was selected after a north versus south trial last weekend.

England call-up Andrew Flintoff's big-hitting exploits today earned him the man-of-the-month award from Wisden Cricket Monthly magazine, the 20-year-old Lancastrian giant beating challenges from the likes of South Africans Allan Donald and Jonty Rhodes as he prepares for a possible Test debut at Trent Bridge tomorrow.
