By Mike Berry

3 July 1998

WILTSHIRE and Norfolk squeezed into the last eight of the MCC Trophy with nail-biting finishes to their final zonal games.

Stuart Barnes was Wiltshire's hero against the Warwickshire Board XI. Barnes, in at N0 9, hoisted five sixes in an unbeaten 65 off 40 balls. Chasing 191 in 45 overs, Wiltshire had been 104 for seven with 10 overs left, but won by one wicket off the last ball, which Dougie Small hit for four.

Norfolk, the holders, secured their passage with a run-out off the final ball against Essex, who fell one run short of matching an imposing 322 for eight total off 60 overs.

Surrey and Kent are the only Board XIs to reach the quarter-finals and they now meet each other. Kent qualified ahead of Buckinghamshire, for whom paceman Adam Cole returned an analysis of 6-5-2-6 in the win over Sussex.

MCC Trophy quarter-finals (July 19)

Devon v Wiltshire (Budleigh Salterton), Shropshire v Lincolnshire (Wellington), Oxfordshire v Norfolk (Challow and Childrey), Surrey v Kent (to be arranged).
