New format for NorTel

The format of the 1998 NorTel Youth Tournament has been changed to 50 overs per side according to manager of the Jamaica team Lynden Wright.

Wright told The Gleaner last night that the rain-hit tournament will, starting next Monday, be played under the Red Stripe Bowl limited overs rules. ``We have made arrangements with the Windward Islands, the Nortel Development and Canadian teams to play three 50 overs practice games in Tobago,'' Wright said. The Jamaica team leaves for Tobago today.

Seasonal rain in Trinidad has left the tournament in disarray. Jamaica's two matches against Guyana and the Leeward Islands have both been abandoned without a ball being bowled. Several other games, scheduled to be played over the usual three days, have also been abandoned.

Wright, said last night however, the rains have failed to dampen the spirits of the young cricketers asyana and Leeward Islands respectively but Wright said the players have settled in nicely with the understanding that they have no control on the weather. ``We have done some fielding practice especially in the catching and throwing departments to keep the boys busy,'' he said.
