Barbados Clubs: Two going after tons

by Philip Spooner

6 June 1998

WITH two batsmen in sight of centuries and one team in sight of a win, the first round of the Courts/Suzuki Division 1 cricket season is set for an intriguing finish.

Sports & Games YMPC captain Sherwin Campbell on 65 not out, and ESA Field Pickwick's Rondell Yearwood, unbeaten on 77, should have their eyes on three figures when play bowls off at 1 p.m., weather permitting.

Campbell might be 35 runs away but from the way he went about his work last week his goal could be achieved in a few overs.

He hammered the Big B Spartan bowlers last week, spanking 13 fours in his side's 121 for six, but will need substantial help from his lower order if his team is to get near the Parkites' 317 for eight.

Yearwood, cultured and disciplined, has been the backbone of Pickwick's 204 for four, which is now just 79 away from BET's 283 for four declared.

The 22-year-old former Young West Indies 'keeper has so far batted for over three hours. With him is the experienced Graham Bethell, who has thumped 40 not out in a fifth-wicket stand worth 49 so far.

Captain Adrian Griffith said of Yearwood: ``He has looked very good, quite composed. He batted well, and has been patient.''

Griffith added that his side would be looking for the lead and then anything after.

``We just want to bat to get the runs without losing many more wickets and then assess the situation from there,'' he said yesterday.

Empire, the 1996 champs, can take care of Mount Gay Maple in a matter of minutes at Trents if they wish.

Maple, 111 behind on first innings, still need another 44 with just three wickets in hand to make Empire bat again.

With veteran seamer Victor Walcott leading a capable attack, Empire should be hunting an innings victory.
