Snub for Scotland in World Cup plea

SCOTLAND'S World Cup hopes have been dealt a blow after the International Cricket Council blocked moves which would have allowed players like Yorkshire's Gavin Hamilton to turn out for the Scots without affecting their chances of going on to play for England.

The proposed rule change to allow the dual qualification was voted out by the nine Test-playing countries at Lord's yesterday. Only one country was prepared to make the concession, with three against and five abstensions.

John Everett, chairman of the Scottish Cricket Union, said: ``All we wanted was for Scots-born players to be allowed to play for us at the World Cup without having to spend four years waiting to re-qualify for England.

``It didn't seem much to ask, but for whatever reason the Test countries have decided not to support us.

``We won't give up trying, but I can't see the proposal going though in time for the World Cup.''

The shock decision will leave Yorkshire's Hamilton and John Blain, of Northants, with an agonising decision over whether to play for Scotland or to reject the chance in the hope of a future test call from England.

Hamilton, the former West Lothian paceman, may be ready to ease Scotland's disappointment by backing their cup effort. However, Everett added: ``We haven't heard from Gavin and we don't expect an early decision. He deserves time to think it through, and I certainly don't want any pressure put on him.''

Meanwhile, the Scots will embark on an overseas trip next spring to tune up for the cup. Four venues, including South Africa and Bangladesh, are under consideration.
