The tournament for I.C.C. Associate members, is a stepping stone to One Day International and to Test cricket.Since the tournaments began in 1979, two Gold Medallists,Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe have achieved Test status.
Bangladesh and Kenya gained ODI status in 1997; with Scotland they qualified for the 1999 World Cup. Bangladesh also applied for Test status.
Canada has been an original participant in the event. Our best performance was in 1979 when as runnersÐup to Sri Lanka, we also qualified and played in the 1979 World Cup against Australia, England and Pakistan.
Two I.C.C. Trophy Management SubÐCommittee members will arrive in Canada on April 8, 1998. The team's mandate includes an assessment of facilities and grounds, accommodation and transportation. They then depart for the U.S.A. President Jorgen Holmen,(Denmark), of the I.C.C. Associates, and Clive Hitchcock,(U.K.), I.C.C. Administration Officer, will be joined by John Shepherd, former West Indian Test cricketer, and newly appointed I.C.C. Development Officer for the Americas from Canada to Argentina. I.C.C. Associate member participants include: Argentina, Bangladesh, Bermuda, Canada, Denmark, E.& C. Africa, Fiji, Gibraltar, Holland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Namibia, Nepal,PapuaÐNew Guinea, Scotland, Singapore, U.A.E., U.S.A., and West Africa.
