Lanka Cavaliers in 8-wkt win

LANKA CAVALIERS celebrated their 1st anniversary with an easy win over Colts Veterans XI on 12th March 1998 at Colts grounds. Their inaugural match in January last year was against the Colts Veterans and they want to make this an annual encounter.

Apart from playing a few friendly games in Colombo, Moratuwa and Kandy, they launched an outstation cricket program, in August 97 consisting of a coaching clinic and a match with a combined local side organised by the respective district cricket associations.

Upto now they have covered seven districts namely Anuradhapura, Moneragala, Matale, Badulla, Ratnapura, Gampaha and Hambantota.

43 teams in Badulla Schools cricket sixes

FORTY THREE teams will vie for honours at the Badulla District inter-schools six-a-side cricket tournament organised by the Badulla District Cricket Association for the Silver Jubilee Independence Celebrations.

The tournament will be conducted for three days commencing from March 25 and the winners will receive the Chief Minister's Trophy presented by Percy Samaraweera, Chief Minister of Uva Province.

According to the organising committee, the tournament will be conducted on two grounds under four groups. The Champions of each group will qualify for the semi-finals.

Arrangements are also being made to provide special prizes for the Best Bowler, Best Batsman and Man of the Series.

The finals will be played on Friday 27th at 5 p.m. where the Chief Minister Percy Samaraweera will be the chief guest. The Chief Minister is also expected to declare open the tournament on 25th of this month.

St. Servatius beat Sri Rahula by 7 wkts

ST. SERVATIUS beat Sri Rahula by 7 wickets at the Uyanwatte Esplanade Matara yesterday.

Sri Rahula 158 and 107 (S. Saluka 27, T. Thenanjaya 23, S. A. Wasantha 4 for 34, K. A. Asela 3 for 18).

St Servatius 167 for 9 declared (M. Subodhana 64, K. A. Asela 41, S. A. Wasantha 24, K. Y. Prabath 5 for 29) and 100 for 3 (Y. S. Mendis 31 n.o., S. A. Wasantha 20 n.o.).

Sri Sumangala - slight edge

SRI SUMANGALA Vidyalaya Panadura had a slight edge over Moratu Vidyalaya at close of play on the first day of their 47th annual encounter at the Panadura Esplanade yesterday.

Two half-centuries by O. C. Warnapura (67) and M. Deshapriya (52) helped Moratu Vidyalaya to make 188 in their first innings, but Sri Sumangala made a strong reply with 100 for 3 wickets at the close. The match will be continued today from 10 am.

Moratu Vidyalaya 188 (O. C. Warnapura 67, M. Deshapriya 52, A. S. de Mel 19, C. L. Fernando 18, D. E. Perera 5 for 41, A. Perera 3 for 61).
