KARACHI, May 19: Karachi University, Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) of Multan and Islamia University of Bahawalpur moved into the semi-finals of the All-Pakistan Inter-University Zone 'B' Cricket Tournament after winning their respective quarter-finals here on Tuesday.

Karachi University, who on Sunday won the Sindh Universities cricket title, defeated Mehran University, Jamshoro, by a margin of 77 runs at the KCCA Stadium.

Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, scored an easy nine-wicket victory over Hamdard University at the Bakhtyiari Youth Centre after dismissing their opponents for a paltry 86.

Islamia University, Bahawalpur, also gained a nine-wicket win over Balochistan University at the NED University of Engineering and Technology Ground.

The architects of Karachi University's success were Ahmed Zeeshan Malik (68), Maisam Hasnain (67) and allrounder Rizwan Qureshi (57). Their combined efforts helped Karachi University make 245 for six in 38 overs.

Medium-pacer Akhlaq Ahmed and off-spinner Karamat Ali took two wickets each for Mehran University.

In reply, the lads from Jamshoro were bowled out for 168 in 36.2 overs. Ex-Pakistan under-19 batsman Shahid Qambrani top-scored with 59 while Aamir Khan made 47.

For Karachi University, off-spinners Haaris Ayaz and Ahmer Saeed and left-armer Rizwan Qureshi claimed two wickets each.

Hamdard University fared miserably against Bahauddin Zakariya University's left-arm spinner Zahid Shah and were sent packing for 86 in 38.4 overs. Zahid captured five for 12 with fellow left-armer Mohammad Arif picking up two for 12.

Abdul Moiz (21) and Mohammad Zeeshan (19) were the only batsmen to bat with confidence for Hamdard University.

Agha Shahid (35 not out) and Saeed Anwar (20 not out) then batted sensibly as the Multan side reached their target, scoring 88 for one in 23.1 overs.

In the third quarter-final, Balochistan University made a reasonable 160 in 37.2 overs with Waheed Fareed scoring 53 and Saadullah Khan 44.

Left-arm spinner Hasan Ali was the pick of the Islamia University's bowlers with figures of three for 31. Off-spinner Zahid Mahmood also claimed three wickets, conceding 31 runs while fellow off-spinner Zain-ul-Abedin took two for 25.

The target of 161 proved far too easy for the Islamia University's batsmen, who faced just 21 overs.

In the semi-finals tomorrow (Wednesday), Karachi University take on Islamia University of Bahawalpur at the KCCA Stadium while Bahauddin Zakariya University meet NED University of Engineering and Technology, who earned a bye, at the latter's ground.
