Fleming supportive of Conference format

Some criticism of Conference cricket is unfounded says New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming.

Fleming is supportive of the concept, which is designed to bridge the gap between the domestic game and the international arena. It brings together the top 36 players in three regional teams plus a visiting international team.

Although he did not play in last season's inaugural series when the Black Caps were overseas, Fleming has noted a step up in the level of intensity to Conference level from Shell Trophy play.

``We really need this because the jump between first-class and international play was proving too great,''said Fleming yesterday. ``We want to fill the gap for however long it takes. People say these are just glorified trial matches and to an extent that's true. But there is a competitive edge out there.''

That was evident when drafted Central captain Craig McMillan was subject to considerable pressure from his usual Canterbury team-mates when playing against Southern in a first-round match.

``It's good if the teams aren't changed around too much,''said Fleming. Southern has no draft players, being comprised completely from Canterbury and Otago and have built a good spirit, Fleming said.

Fleming hopes that the Conference system, over several seasons, will lift the standard to the point where the Shell Trophy could perhaps be re-instituted over two rounds.

The Shell Trophy was reduced to one round and a final when the Conference tournament started.

Fleming said the build-up of playing an intensive series was ideal before India arrived next month.

Fleming is making the most of the series, having posted scores of 13, 48 not out, and an impressive 145 in the first innings of the match against Pakistan A.

Fleming said Pakistan A was good opposition, although its fielding was struggling to reach the top level. In coming seasons England A and India A are scheduled to make up the fourth team.
