England: Mallender wins place on Umpires List

ECB Media Release
5 November 1998

The former Northants, Somerset and England pace bowler Neil Mallender has been appointed to the First Class Umpires List starting from next season.

Mallender, who played twice for England against Pakistan in 1992 and took 5-50 on his Test debut at Headingley, has been on the Reserve List for the past two seasons. He retired from First Class Cricket in 1996 after taking more than 900 wickets in his 16-year career.

His appointment by the ECB follows the recent retirement of Harold 'Dickie' Bird from the First Class Umpires List.

Jeff Evans, from Llanelli, has also been appointed to the Reserve List of First Class Umpires for 1999. A teacher, he has an impressive record as an umpire in Minor County and Second XI cricket.

The ECB has nominated David Shepherd, Peter Willey, Mervyn Kitchen and George Sharp as its four umpires on the ICC National Grid Panel until the end of the 1999 domestic cricket season. All four were nominated for the 1998 season and stood in England's Cornhill Test matches against South Africa and Sri Lanka.
