Barbados: Top Team Up Against It

Mark Lavine's unexpected return to South Africa has had a ripple effect.

Not only has Lavine's sudden exit affected the balance of the Barbados team for next week's Red Stripe Bowl, but it has put Big B Spartan in a spot of bother.

The talented allrounder has been Spartan's leading player this season and the Parkites would have been looking to him as they try to topple Mount Gay Maple at Trents and stay on top the table.

At present, Maple are 128 runs ahead, having gained first innings lead last Sunday. Lavine has already taken four of the six second innings wickets and would have been tipped to get more.

The weather is another factor that may go against the leaders. Heavy rain yesterday afternoon, would have affected the pitch and outfield, and Spartan may have to chase the victory target in less than ideal batting conditions.

The team's premier batsman Livy Puckerin said they have no choice but to play for the win.

``We will be looking for eight points regardless of the conditions,'' the former Barbados wicket-keeper/batsman said.

``Mark is one of our better players and he will be missed, but myself and the other batters will have to buckle down and do the job.''

Police, second behind Spartan at the start of this series, are in a good position to record a win over Cockspur Wanderers at Dayrells Road.

Police enforced the follow-on after the homeside faltered in their first innings and with Sylvester Louis and Emmerson Sealy, who has over 40 wickets for the season, in their attack, the lawmen will be going to return to the top of the ladder.
