Leaders Police are in search of at least first innings points today after a five-wicket haul by seamer Alvin Campbell placed them in command over Sports and Games YMPC.
Campbell, in his first season of first division cricket, grabbed five for 43 as he exposed a brittle YMPC line-up on a good batting strip yesterday.
The tall all-rounder ripped apart the innings with a steady line of medium pace and often confused the batsmen with some clever variations of pace.
Winning the toss and opting to bat, YMPC experienced an early setback, losing their first two wickets for 31 runs, before opener Ian Straughn and captain Terry Rollock steered a small recovery which helped the hometeam to 60 for two at one stage.
They shared a positive third wicket stand of 29 but once Rollock was bowled by Emmerson Sealy for 16, giving the paceman his 50th wicket of the season, YMPC steadily surrendered wickets to the opposition thereafter.
The left-handed Straughn, showing a good mix of aggression and defence as he struck seven boundaries, eventually fell to Campbell for a responsible knock of 35 as he edged to wicketkeeper Derwin Thompson.
Campbell also picked up the wickets of Kenrick Marshall, bowled driving at a well-pitched ball, Barry Lowe, leg before wicket playing back, and the defiant Adrian Jones who was last out for 24.
Jones, who batted at No.8 and occupied the crease for close to two hours, rallied the lower order for some vital runs after YMPC were 107 for seven but was bowled as he tried to force a delivery into the off-side in an effort to steal the strike.
Police, left to face the final 16 overs in the day's play, were struggling on 15 for two as Kenrick Marshall sent back Feliston Gilkes and Barry Lowe drew Ahmed Proverbs into a false stroke; the batsman driving an easy catch to Marshall at mid-off.
However, opener Stephen Herbert and Rudolph Clarke held out to the end.
