ECB press release
27 October 1998

The ECB has recruited the Leicestershire coach Jack Birkenshaw to work with the England One-Day squad during their pre-tour preparation period in the UK for the Carlton and United One-Day International series in Australia next year.

Birkenshaw, who this season coached Leicestershire to their second Britannic Assurance County Championship title in three years, will oversee two pre-tour training sessions for the squad at Trent Bridge in November and December.

He has been chosen for the role in the absence of the England Coach David Lloyd who will be in Australia for the duration of the Ashes Test Series and the Carlton and United One-Day series.

The ECB's International Teams Director Simon Pack said: "David Graveney, David Lloyd and I are delighted that Jack is able to take on this important role. His coaching skills are widely respected throughout the game and we are pleased to have secured his services for the pre-tour preparation period."

The squad for the Carlton and United One-Day series will be selected in mid November and fly out to Australia on December 26.

Jack Birkenshaw said: "I am thrilled to have been given the chance to work with the England One-Day squad and hope that I can help lay the foundations for a successful winter 'Down Under.'"

Leicestershire's Chief Executive David Collier said: "This is a fitting reward for the huge contribution Jack has made to Leicestershire cricket in recent years. His pedigree as a coach is second-to-none and I'm sure that the One-Day squad will benefit enormously from working with him."
