RSA: Cullinan opens for Gauteng - Pollock hurt.
Bob Dubery (for CricInfo)
October 3 1998
Durban. Daryll Cullinan is to move up to the opening spot for
South Africa in the forthcoming Wills series in Bangladesh, and
he had a taste of the new ball in a friendly match against
Kwa-Zulu-Natal on Thursday. Cullinan top-scored for his province
with a quick and confident 60 (72 balls, 73 minutes, 9 4s). Derek
Crookes, also batting higher than usual in the order, scored 53
at number 3, but saw three partners run out as Gauteng scored
just 189/9 off their allotted 45 overs.
Kwa-Zulun-Natal won at canter, scoring 190/3 in 41 overs. Doug
Watson opened for KZN and top scored with 79 not out, but his
innings (113 balls, 142 minutes 8 4s) was more restrained than
Cullinan's dashing knock. Jonty Rhodes (33, 29 balls, 6 4s) and
captain Dale Benkenstein (35*, 20 balls, 3 6s, 2 4s) lent
aggression to the KZN effort towards the end of the innings.
Victory had a price though. Shaun Pollock bowled just 4 overs
before leaving the field with a back injury. The strain is not
severe, but it may be enough to force the fast bowling star out
of the opening matches of KZN's Standard Bank League campaign.
Prior to this game the same two provinces had played a friendly
3-day game, and this was dominated by Gauteng.
The visiting up-country team batted first and put on 372/5. They
then bowled with more discipline than their coastal rivals to
bowl them out for 175. Gauteng then took some batting practice
and made 163/2 in their second innings.
Scores:
3-day game. Gauteng 372/5 121 overs (Cullinan 67, Rutherford 57,
de Bruyn 96*, Pothas 105*) Kwa-Zulu-Natal 175 (Stewart 45,
Eksteen 3/57) Gauteng 163/2 (Koening 75)
1-day game. Gauteng 189/9 45 overs (Cullinan 60, Crookes 53)
Kwa-Zulu-Natal 190/3 41 overs (Watson 79)
