Vidyartha by 8 wickets

Two nine wicket hauls by left arm spinner Sarath Ranaweera (9 for 65) and right arm off spinner Sanjay Nanayakkara (9 for 79) spearheaded Vidyartha College, Kandy to an eight-wicket win over St. Thomas College, Matale in their Coca Cola Bottlers trophy cricket tournament match concluded at police grounds, Kandy yesterday. Vidyartha won with over two hours to spare.

Thomians in strong position

A deadly spell of bowling by off spinner Harshana Jayawardena (6 for 10) and a superb century from Upeka Fernando (103) put S.Thomas' College in a strong position on the opening day of their inter school cricket encounter against Kingswood College, Kandy played at Mount Lavinia yesterday.

The Thomians did well to dismiss their opponents for a paltry 56 runs and then finished the day at a formidable 235 for 9 with Upeka Fernando compiling 103 inclusive of two sixes and seven boundaries. The match will be continued at 9.30 a.m today.

Night peak power a new high

The Mean Night Peak power consumption is currently 1040.2 MW. On Monday when Sri Lanka met New Zealand in a mini-World Cup match in Dhaka, the Night Peak power consumption reached 1121.8 MW. This indicates a rise of 81.6 MW or 7.84% above the mean. To meet this increased demand auxiliary power generation was utilised for a period of approximately four hours.
