Wills International Cup Countdown
By Zahid Newaz in Dhaka
12 October 1998
England have cancelled plans to hold two warmup games in Calcutta
against Bengal and India A before the tournament and instead will
travel straight to Dhaka. New Zealand will play two warmup games
against New South Wales in Sydney this week.
Zimbabwe will be first team to reach Dhaka for Wills International
Cup Cricket. They are expected on early October 18. Also on the same
day, England will arrive at 3 pm. New Zealand will come on October 20
while South Africa on October 22. World champions Sri Lanka will come
on October 24 afternoon. The following day, both India and West
Indies will reach Dhaka. Six cricketers of Australia will also come
on the same day. However, 14 other members of Australia along with
the Pakistan team will come by the same flight on October 27.
Sunil Gavaskar has been invited to witness the mini-world cup as a
special guest of the BCB. He is expected in Dhaka on October 27. The
BCB has also invited legendary Pakistani all-rounder Imran Khan.
Medical teams and volunteers will be deputed in galleries of
Bangabandhu National Stadium during all the matches. The teams,
titled ``May I Help You'' will look after spectators for any emergency
need. This is the first time such medical teams will be deployed in
the galleries of the stadium.
Spectators will be checked by metal detectors while entering the
stadium. This is also for the first time such detectors will be used for
ordinary galleries. Authorities have already announced that no
crackers would be allowed in and around the venue. Explosion of
crackers that create sound but don't hurt anyone is very popular for
jubilation in Dhaka.
