England: Youngsters' Lord's treat

THE idea of cricket as a seamless journey from school playground to Test arena was given some coherence at Lord's yesterday when Angus Fraser and Nasser Hussain were in the nets at the MCC indoor school coaching 17 schoolboys from Wales.

The youngsters had helped St Fagans CC win 11 games to take this year's Sun Life of Canada under-15 club championship. The prize of a day at Lord's with two England players was an added reward. St Fagans have given their Lord's Taverners cheque for £500 to Cantonian Comprehensive School in Cardiff, who supplied two of the winning team.

Their coach, Phil Makinson, who played at Lord's when the club won the National Village Championship for the third time, picked out 13-year-old Nick Swetman, a seam bowling all-rounder, as a possible future Glamorgan player and is looking forward to the day that Tom Maynard, son of the county captain Matthew, is ready to play for his under-15s. ``He's only nine,'' said Makinson, ``but he's already a very promising cricketer.''

Nearly 1,500 schools competed this year and St Fagans beat Crewe Rolls-Royce in the final at Basingstoke in July.
