Under-15s Cricket Battle On

The requirement is a further 212 runs if Deighton Griffith are to take the Cable & Wireless BET Under-15 trophy in their first ever final. For Foundation, it's eight wickets if they want to make it third time lucky.

With an outright win a remote possibility, Foundation appear to be slightly ahead in the hunt for first innings lead, and if Deighton Griffith are to challenge, they will need a brilliant effort from their two not-out batsmen, captain Derick Bishop and opener Hendy Blades.

Blades, tall, big and aggressive, has already made 25 with a number of powerful drives, while Bishop, a two-time national Under-15 selectee, has looked uncertain in making nine.

With 20 minutes left, Bishop almost played on to 13-year-old Jamal Forde, who generated surprising pace from the southern end. Closer to the close, Bishop again watched anxiously as a defensive prod against leg-spinner Ravi Shankar bounced over the stumps.

Before then, Foundation's opening attack made some inroads when Forde sent back Martin Nurse for a ``duck'', with the score on eight, and seamer Ryan Morris accounted for Ricardo Chase at 27.

The left-handed Nurse could not negotiate a quick bouncer and fended it into his leg-stump, while Chase chased a wide half-volley and provided 'keeper Shane Blenman with an easy catch.

This happened 30 minutes into the Deighton Griffith innings after Foundation's plan of allowing overnight batsman Dwayne Farrell the chance of making a century fell through.

Play started two hours late due to overnight showers, and the elegant Farrell, who batted the entire first day, resumed on 75 in sight of his maiden century.

He added just 11 in an hour before he was the third of three run-outs. Looking for a quick single, he sprinted three-quarters of the pitch but received no response from Randy Thompson.

In trying to regain his ground, Farrell dropped his bat, fell and tried to crawl into the crease on hands and knees. Sadly, the 14-year-old's effort was in vain and brought an unceremonious end to a fine innings which spanned 330 minutes and required 241 balls.
