The enigma drops a 'bomb' The Barbados Nation - 26 April 1999 Enigmatic West Indies all-rounder Carl Hooper has stunningly announced his retirement from international cricket, only three weeks before the World Cup starts. The Guyana-born 32-year-old all-rounder missed the opening two Tests of the recent four-match series against Australia because he was in Australia with his wife and newly-born son, who was ill. He returned to the Caribbean for the final two Tests and confirmed he wanted to play in the World Cup, but appeared to be lacking fitness and commitment and produced a series of mediocre displays on his return. His returns since then: Third Test Batting: 25 and 6 Bowling: 15.4-4-50-2 Fourth Test Batting: 47, 12 Bowling: 10-1-34-0, 30.4-7-69-3 One-Day Internationals Second: 17; 10-0-66-2 Third: 56; 9-0-47-0 Fourth: 23; 10-0-29-0 Fifth: 8; 6-0-48-1 Sixth: 8; 8-0-37-0
