St. Elizabeth Technical crowned themselves kings of rural schoolboy cricket for the 16th time, after defeating Holmwood Technical by an emphatic 86 runs an hour and five minutes before lunch on the second day of the Headley Cup final at Alpart Sports Club yesterday.

Scores: STETHS 176 from 92.3 overs (Kamal Dennis 65, Brenton Parchment 48; Andre Dwyer 3-30, Kevin Peart 3-73, Evon McInnis 2-34); Holmwood 90 from 27.3 overs.

Junior Bennett, STETHS' coach, had high praises for his team but singled out pacers Kamal Dennis and Brenton Parchment as key elements to their win.

Bennett said: ``We played as true champions. We were in dire straights at 70 for six on Tuesday's first day but (Kamal) Dennis batted responsibly along with (Brenton) Parchment and once we had made 176 we knew it was a winning total. We have been bowling consistently the whole season and no team since 1979 has scored more than 150 runs against us in a final.''

Robert Lewis, Holmwood's coach, blamed their loss on poor fielding.

He said: ``We have a good unit but poor fielding let us down and when it was time for us to bat we lost three quick wickets and lost the initiative when we went to bat today (yesterday),'' Lewis said.

Resuming at the precarious overnight total of 22 for three, Holmwood were pushed on the back-foot as Kamal Dennis ca ptured five wickets for 35 runs from 14 overs, while Lamorne Wright took four for 40 from 13 overs.

STETHS used three bowlers - one of them Nikita Miller who bowled only three balls - to rip out their opponents whose last seven wickets fell for 68 runs.

Kevin Wynter added two runs to his overnight score before he was first man out yesterday, bowled by pacer Wright for four and Junior Lawrence who was unbeaten on six overnight, went leg before to Wright for 10.

Odean Brown was leg before to Dennis for seven, Kevin Peart and Andre Dwyer were bowled by Dennis for two and zero respectively, while Kelvin Jones was leg before to Wright without scoring.

Evon McInnis, the only player to put up some resistance with 42, which included one six and five boundaries, was last man out when he went by the run out route.

Victory qualified STETHS for the Spalding Cup - symbol of all-island schoolboy supremacy - play-off against the winners of the Corporate Area Sunlight Cup competition which is in its semi-final stage.
