Big Merv and Carl drop by on eve of fourth Test
Preparations for the all-important fourth Test have been quite low key
here in Antigua, more as a result of weary minds and bodies than lack of
determination for a big result. It feels strange that we have another
test match starting tomorrow when only three days ago we all experienced
one of the most draining days of test cricket in history.
Adam Gilchrist's arrival in Antigua was a timely one, as he has injected
a pair of fresh legs and his normal fantastic team spirit to the
training squad. Although he will spend the Test match on the supporter's
bench, I must admit it is fantastic to have a fellow West Australian in
the squad. I have gained great pleasure from his recollections of the
Shield final victory a couple of weeks ago.
As I have described before, we have a fabulous contingent of Aussie
supporters here in the Caribbean. Two of those supporters are none other
than Australian cricket legends Mervyn Hughes and Carl Rackemann, who
are hosting tour groups. Both ex-fast bowlers joined us at training
yesterday to help the batsmen get in some extra net practice. Although
they both admit to having pulled up very stiff and sore today, it was an
excellent boost for the team having these guys training with us.
The big news tonight is that Shane Warne will not play in tomorrow's
Test match. Steve Waugh described the decision to omit Warney as one of
the toughest things he has ever had to do. Obviously Warney is very
disappointed with the selectors' decision, but I am sure, knowing his
character, he will be working harder than ever to regain his position in
the first 11. It seems remarkable that any Australian team can go into a
Test match without a fit Shane Warne. It just goes to show how
unpredictable this crazy game really is.
From Antigua, pumped up for tomorrow, JL!
