UCB Media Statement On Makhaya Ntini
UCBSA - 23 April 1999

We believe rape is a heinous crime and out previous and current comments on this matter must not be construed in any other light. We supported Makhaya because we believed him, as did his and the UCB lawyers, to be innocent of the charge.

We are obviously disappointed by the judgement handed down by the magistrate.

We have not had an opportunity to study the judgement but, having spoken to Makhaya's lawyers, we understand that there are definite grounds for an appeal.

The UCB will continue to support Makhaya until the legal process has been completed.

Sadly, Makhaya Ntini will be withdrawn from the South African Squad for the World Cup and his replacement is Alan Dawson from Western Province.

Signed

Dr Ali Bacher Managing Director
