Sri Lanka Schools: Ananda - STC, Lumbini - Cambrians meet in 'Lemonade' semis
Chris Dhambarage - 28 April 1999

The semi finalists were found in the inter-school limited over knockout tournament for the Elephant Lemonade Trophy after the four quarter final matches played in Colombo yesterday.

Ananda, S. Thomas', Lumbini and Prince of Wales won their respective quarter final matches played yesterday to book their place in tomorrow's semi finals. Ananda will take on S. Thomas' at NCC grounds while Lumbini will meet Prince of Wales at the adjoining CCC grounds. The winners of these two games will advance to the final to be played at SSC grounds on Sunday.

In one of the key quarter final matches played at the Premadasa Stadium, Ananda registered a smashing eight-wicket win over the strong St. Peter's team. Batting first, the Peterites were shot out for 112 in 46.4 overs and Ananda reached the target with 26.2 overs to spare for the loss of only two wickets. Akalanga Ganegama (4 for 18) and L. Fernando (50 n.o.) were the architects of the convincing Ananda win.

S. Thomas' advanced to the semi finals when they edged out Kalutara MV by 34 runs in their quarter final match played at CCC grounds, Maitland Place yesterday. Despite being bowled out for 161 in 46.2 overs, S. Thomas' did well to defend their low total. The Thomian bowlers, skipper Naren Ratwatte, Suranga Peiris and Dilshan Gunawardena led a superb fight back as Kalutara MV were bowled out for 127 in 47.4 overs.

It was another low scoring game at NCC grounds, Maitland Place where Lumbini beat St. Sylvester's, Kandy by 65 runs. Chasing Lumbini's unimpressive 146 all out in 46.4 overs, the Kandy schoolboys could only make 81 all out in 39 overs.

In the fourth quarter final match played at Sara Stadium, Prince of Wales registered an exciting 12-run win over their traditional rivals St. Sebastian's. In reply to the Cambrians' total of 142 all out in 44.2 overs, St. Sebastian's were bowled out for 130 in 46.5 overs.

The tournament is conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and sponsored by Ceylon Cold Stores for the Elephant Lemonade trophy.
