Dawn PM to host reception for World Cup squad today
The Dawn - 24 April 1999

ISLAMABAD, April 23: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will meet the England-bound Pakistan World Cup squad at an official reception at PM House on Saturday morning at 10 am.

The prime minister returned from the Russian visit on Friday afternoon.

Special instructions have been issued to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief executive to have Javed Miandad come to the reception, sources in the PM house told Dawn. Miandad's resignation as coach of Pakistan team five days ahead of team's departure has triggered a crisis in Pakistan's cricket.

Besides, the 18-member World Cup squad, three cricketers who are not part of the WC team but represented Pakistan during the series against India and the Asian Test Championship are invited to the reception.

Other invitees include six cricket board officials headed by PCB chairman Khalid Mahmood, twelve counsellors and four coaches including Sarfraz Nawaz.

Meanwhile, minister incharge sports Mushahid Hussain Syed is learnt to have contacted Javed Miandad and a background move is under way to ask the former stalwart to go with the team.
