Glenn McGrath - Profile 1999
Rick Eyre - 5 August 1999

Took over the mantle of Australia's premier fast bowler after the retirement of Craig McDermott in the mid-1990's. Tall, thin and lanky, McGrath's unspectacular but technically sound action produces a hostile pace and unlikely bounce on even the most unhelpful of pitches. His fiercely competitive nature has found him on the wrong side of match referees on more than one occasion. Despite the interruptions to his career for injury which seem obligatory for a fast bowler these days, McGrath appears well on the way to being one of Australia's (and the world's) leading Test wicket-takers of all time. His career highlights include an extraordinary 8/38 against England at Lord's in 1997, while followers of the 1999 World Cup will remember his demolition of the Indian top order during Australia's march to tournament victory. A dependable outfielder, but McGrath's number-eleven batting is one of the running jokes of contemporary Australian cricket. Nicknames: "Pigeon" or "Millard" (the latter after the make of caravan he used to live in.)
